COMMON QUESTIONS
|
Different students have different concerns when it comes to studying in the USA. Here, you'll find some of the more common questions to help guide you through your visa process.
Do I need a student visa to study in the USA?
Yes. All foreign nationals intending to study in the US need a student visa.
What do I need to apply for an F-1 student visa?
First, you'll need a letter of acceptance from an approved American educational institution. Once you have that, you can begin your application. Further documentation will be requested at different stages of the visa process.
When should I apply for my student visa?
You should apply as soon as you have your school's letter of acceptance. The time it takes to process an application may vary depending on the visa office. Therefore, it's best to allow as much processing time as possible.
Will I need a medical examination to study in the US?
Generally, only international students coming from certain designated countries require a medical examination. If you have been accepted into a program where you will be visiting a hospital, daycare center, school or other facility where it is important to protect public health, you may also be requested to undergo a medical exam. Your local visa office will be able to inform you of whether or not you need the exam, and can help you find the closest designated doctor who can perform it.
What happens if I lose my study permit?
You can replace a lost study permit by contacting US Citizenship and Immigration (USCIS).
I am already in the US on a valid study permit. What do I need to do to modify my study permit if I want to change my school or program?
If you are enrolled in a program at a post-secondary institution, you can change your school, level, program and field of studies without applying for a new study permit, as long as it is an accredited school.
Can I return home or travel outside of the USA during my ESL studies?
International students from certain designated countries require a multiple-entry visa to re-enter the US if they leave during their studies. To re-enter the US, you will need a valid passport and travel documents, and a valid student visa.
Can I work while studying ESL in the USA?
International students may be able to work either part- or full-time during their studies, depending on the employer.
