ESL High School Preparation programs are designed to give international students the language skills necessary for success in regular US high school courses. The programs aim to improve international students' English language ability in the areas of reading, vocabulary, writing, grammar, speaking and listening, and students often take language courses as well as subject-specific high school preparation courses in areas such as science, social studies, math, health, physical education, art, drama and music. Curriculum content may vary, as it is usually determined by local/state school boards. ESL High School Preparation programs also aim to introduce international students to American life and culture through field trips and special activities. It may also be possible for a student to move up from the ESL High School Preparation program to the regular High School Credit Program at some point during the year.
ESL High School Preparation programs are offered for the various high school grade levels, and may be offered on a full-time, year-round basis or as shorter courses.
