ESL Homestay programs provide international students with a room in the home of an American family in exchange for a fee. ESL homestay therefore combines tourism with a study abroad program, with the goal of international students learning English while they experience American daily life and culture.
Homestay programs provide the maximum opportunity for international students to practice their English, since they will be living with their host families. The atmosphere is relaxed and nurturing (as opposed to a formal classroom learning environment), and provides affordable accommodation while the student is in the United States. ESL Homestay programs may include room and board (i.e. meals), or they may only include the room. These programs are often organized through colleges, universities and some community-based language institutes.
