ESL FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
|
ESL programs for high school students may be separate language-focused courses, or may cover the range of regular high school subjects as determined by each state's education department. Which means students will cover geography, chemistry, biology, literature and other subjects while improving their English reading, writing and speaking skills. International students therefore gain a solid grasp of general and idiomatic English, as well as academic vocabulary and study skills. As they progress, international students may eventually be fully integrated with regular academic classes.
High school ESL teaching methods combine traditional classroom lecture and note-taking with interaction, innovation and technology. Games, puzzles, computer workshops, language labs, concentration exercises, and other in-school activities are supplemented with field trips, student clubs, athletics and various extra-curricular activities that encourage English language practice and social and cultural learning.
ESL for high school programs each have specific learner outcomes that define the program. These outcomes will vary from school to school, bit in general high school ESL learner outcomes include the ability to demonstrate:
using spoken and written English to gather, interpret and communicate information using spoken and written English to establish and maintain relationships using spoken and written English to make decisions, solve problems, and plan and carry out projects
Some states have particular high school exit exams for ESL students, and high schools offering ESL programs for international students in the USA will all offer comprehensive and dedicated support services to help international students succeed in all facets of their high school life.
