Geography and climate vary greatly across the USA. With a total land area of over 9.6 million square kilometers, the United States is either the third or fourth largest country in the world (depending on how China's size is calculated). The US is divided into 48 "continental" states, which are those connected to one another on the North American continent. The US's two additional states, Alaska and Hawaii, and separated from the other states: Alaska is located in the northwestern most part of North America, but separated from the other continental states by Canada; Hawaii is a series of islands off the west coast of the US in the Pacific Ocean. Together, the 50 states encompass a wide variety of geographic regions, including the following landscapes:
- broad, flat coastal plains on the Atlantic and Gulf shores - rolling hills and temperate forests
- high mountain ranges (e.g. The Rocky Mountains)
- The Great Lakes, located in the north-central part of the country
- subtropical forests in the southeast
- mangrove wetlands near the gulf coast (especially Florida)
- farmland in the midwest
- deserts and badlands
- Arctic tundra
- tropical, volcanic islands (Hawaii)
The desert of Death Valley in California is the US's lowest point at 86 meters below sea level, and the country's highest point is Alaska's Mount McKinley (also known as Denali) at 6,194 meters.
This variegation in size and geography means the United States also contains examples of virtually every type of climate. Temperature extremes around the country range from northern Alaska's arctic conditions (where temperatures can drop as low as -62°C) to Death Valley, California, where it once reached 56.7°C.
