Working as an international student in the USA may be possible on your student visa, but will depend on your employer and the number of work hours available. Specific regulations may vary considerably; therefore, international students interested in working while in the USA should check with their school and local consulate.
The kinds of work available to international students in the USA include:
On-Campus Employment International students in the USA may be eligible for part-time work at their educational institution on their student visa. The educational institution will be able to provide you with information on opportunities and guidelines.
Off-Campus Employment International students in the USA may be allowed to accept off-campus employment after the completion of their first year of study (of a longer degree program), under limited circumstances.
Co-op or Internship Some US programs, including ESL programs, include work-experience as part of the curriculum. International students need additional documents in order to participate in such a program: an I-20 endorsed for OPT and a USCIS-issued Employment Authorization Document (EAD). The educational institution you are attending can provide these documents.
Note: Family members accompanying international students to the USA will not be allowed to accept employment.
